Center for Academic Excellence at Vista La Rosa

The Center for Academic Excellence at Vista La Rosa Apartments provides residents in grades K-12 help with their homework, projects, and assignments. The Program also engages participants in art, STEM, and literacy related activities.

Alexis Martinez, Resident Services Coordinator

I grew up in California’s Central Valley, and have lived in San Diego for the last 4 years. I am a San Diego State graduate and am excited to bring to the Center for Academic Excellence my many years of experience working with kids in multiple academic and recreational settings. I am bilingual in English and Spanish, and am excited to use this platform to reach out to the community and encourage the importance of education to our students. I will be helping students with their homework, helping them study for upcoming tests, as well as focusing on any areas they need specific help with. My hope for the students who join me at the Center for Academic Excellence is that they would realize their individual worth and become aware of the many services available to them to help them achieve success. I want to help the students find their passions and set life goals, both academic and social, and then help with form a plan to achieve these goals.

I want to welcome students to come visit me in the Tutoring Center Monday-Thursday from 1:00 pm-5:00 pm and Friday’s from 3:00 pm-5:00 pm. And parents, I want to meet you as well! Please come by so that I can get to know you all. I look forward to working with you!

2017 Paper Plate Campaign

Housing on Merit participated in the San Diego Hunger Coalition’s Annual Paper Plate Campaign to help raise awareness about hunger in their community. Young residents at Vista La Rosa wrote messages about their lived experience with hunger on paper plates. The paper plates were then shared with local and state elected officials in Sacramento in order to advocate for-anti hunger policies and legislation!
